Roberto Di Matteo’s Chelsea currently has the luxury of only two forwards: Daniel Sturridge and Fernando Torres and the top priority of the club in the transfer window seems to be acquiring a striker. Although they have already splashed the cash of three midfielders.
They have been linked with the Brazilian striker Hulk but the London club’s ‘sources’ have told ESPN that they know the price tag for Hulk but they have never negotiated with Porto.
With that said, Chelsea is now linked with a transfer from Italy, where figures of roughly £27.5 million price tag are circulating in the media for Napoli striker Edinson Cavani. Napoli have already replaced Ezequiel Lavezzi with Goran Pandev but more importantly, Chelsea have signed a crop of very promising, young midfielders: Marko Marin, Eden Hazard and Oscar (for a total of £64 million).
Addition of Edinson Cavani alongside Fernando Torres could do wonders for Chelsea not just next season but for the next few seasons if Di Matteo can manage the team well. But is Roman Abramovic really going to raise his transfer expenditure to nearly £90 million? Specially since they let players like Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou go for free transfers.
Having said that, Cavani has struck 33 goals in 47 games last season and he is only 25 years old. On top of that, he is reasonably priced as compared to Porto’s £60 million demand.
Chelsea has won the UEFA Champions League last season and they will definitely be looking forward to at least give the two Manchester clubs a tough time in the title chase. Manchester United are rumored to be after Robin van Persie and Manchester City has spare first-team strikers.
Cavani will be a good choice for Chelsea – well, at least much better than Hulk – not in terms of the quality of the players but more in terms of money. Chelsea have also loaned their Belgian version of Drogba, Romelu Lukaku to West Brom for the season and in case of injury to Torres of Sturridge, Chelsea will have to completely rely on their midfield to give them any chance in the league.
