School gardens: The end of a great year

CONGRATULATIONS to our schools on a fantastic year's work in the garden.

As we come to enjoy the summer break, I hope that both teachers and pupils have enjoyed all they have learned as part of our campaign to get youngsters gardening.

And thank you, as ever, for sending us photos of your progress.

Pupils from Retendon Primary School in Essex are working away to bring colour to their school grounds.

The cold, very wet summer has slowed thing down - but even so their Gerbera Garvinea are rooting out well and should produce bunches of flower when they return to the new school year in September.

Gebera come from sunny, dry South Africa and this recently introduced hardy kind is standing up to the wet very well.

We also have pictures of school gardens from Cheshire, Yorkshire, Devon, SE London, Essex and Hertfordshire that I shall file over the next few weeks.

Enjoy the school holidays and don't forget to keep up the good work on your wonderful gardens.
