Two canoe kids die and dad ‘missing’ in Loch Gairloch

TWO children died last night and a dad was missing presumed drowned after their canoe capsized in a freezing loch.

The boys, aged three and five, perished hours after being plucked from remote Loch Gairloch in Scotland.

Another five-year-old girl was fighting for life in hospital after a girl of ten managed to swim to shore and raise the alarm.

A second father, aged 36, also escaped.

A massive rescue operation swung into operation to rescue the group of six who had been enjoying a day canoeing off Big Sands camp site.

A police spokesman said: “Search efforts for the missing 34-year-old man have been suspended for the night.”

It is believed the Canadian canoe capsized, throwing the occupants into the water and that the two adults were not wearing life jackets.

The heroic ten-year-old girl managed to swim to shore and raise the alarm. Fishing boats and whale-spotting craft joined the search and within minutes of arriving, Portree lifeboat had recovered two children from the water.

Another child was rescued from the sea loch.
