Glorious British sports stars say goodbye to fantastic games

TEAM GB athletes are the pride of the nation after achieving our best Olympics results for over 100 years as the London 2012 Games draw to a close tonight.

Our superstars powered to 65 glittering medals - including a fantastic 29 golds.

Britain came third in the table, with only the US and China ahead.

After an amazing 16 days of sport, boxer Anthony Joshua punched his way to our final gold medal to be crowned super heavyweight champ.

The haul started on day three when Lizzie Armistead pedalled to a glorious silver medal in the women's road race.

From that point on the flow of success could not be halted with medals galore coming.

And Team GB got the royal seal of approval, as the athletes were thanked by the Queen for their efforts.

The Queen said: "As the 2012 London Olympic Games come to a close, I offer my congratulations to the athletes of Great Britain and the Commonwealth."

She said their efforts "have truly captured the public’s imagination and earned their admiration."

And not many people would disagree - as we celebrated British golds on the road, track and water as jubilant fans watched.

More were delivered on the tennis courts, in the velodrome, fighting arenas and firing ranges as Team GB put their best feet forward.

Millions of fans made their way to London to get a taste of the action - while even more watched on TV.

In just 45minutes on "Super Saturday" our golden girl Jessica Ennis stormed home to win the heptathlon, Greg Rutherford powered to long jump gold and marvellous Mo Farah took a stunning first place in the 10,000m.

Many thought it wouldn't get any better - but Team GB athletes were addicted to winning.

There were emotional scenes in the velodrome when Sir Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton and Laura Trott all picked up medals.

Hoy now leads the all-time British gold medal count, and Ben Ainslie has become the greatest ever Olympic sailor.

While little heard-of athletes are set to now become household names after bursting through for Games glory.

And an army of volunteers have helped make it all happen, ensuring it all ran smoothly.
