GOLDEN girls Heather Stanning and Helen Glover became the first Brits to top the podium at London 2012.
The women’s pair were clear favourites going into their rowing final at Eton Dorney and dominated the opposition from start to finish.
Both reigning world champions New Zealand and twice-defending Olympic champions Romania were left in their wake as they stormed to victory — the duo also claiming a first-ever Olympics gold in women's rowing.
It brings to a end an anxious wait for British sport fans and hope is it will provide a boost as Team GB bid for an ambitious medal target of at least 48 gongs.
It was both rowers' first Olympic Games and to make the success even more remarkable, Scot Glover, 26, has only been rowing for FOUR YEARS.
She was product of the UK Sport scheme that auditioned for woman over 5ft 11in tall and first tried the sport when the Beijing Olympics was on her telly.
Stanning, 27, from Yeovil is a captain in the Royal Artillery and put her career on hold to continue her sport.

George Nash and William Satch dominated their semi to reach the coxless pair final.
But the duo will have their work cut out in the final as they face New Zealand’s all-conquering men’s pair of Hamish Bond and Eric Murray.
