The Sun says: Dream Team

WAS it only seven days ago The Sun was praying for Britain’s first Olympics gold medal?

Was it only last Wednesday we were gazing disconsolately at a medal table with Team GB languishing at 21st — while the Aussies ridiculed us for having no golds?

Today we are celebrating Britain’s greatest Olympics in modern history — and the Games are still in full swing.

Team GB’s tally of 22 golds, cementing third place in the table, not only eclipses the 19 won at Beijing but represents the highest haul for 104 years.

Last night, just when it seemed we were running out of superlatives, Sir Chris Hoy rewrote British Olympics history by winning his sixth cycling gold.

Success is breeding success. Every Team GB athlete is striding into action full of confidence.

Sir Chris, and all your team mates, we salute you.

Olympic spark

THE Sun set Britain talking yesterday with our Support Sport In Our Schools campaign.

We want the national school curriculum to include a minimum of one lesson a day of serious physical activity so we can tap into the Olympics legacy and create the sports stars of the future.

Our campaign was a hot topic on radio and TV and in the Olympic park.

Gold medallist Jessica Ennis summed up the national reaction by saying: “I’d back it all the way.

“I’d support anything that gets kids fitter and into sport.”

LOCOG member and 2000 Games hero Jonathan Edwards said: “Getting it right in schools is vital and you have to invest.

“To let the Olympics go without maximising the opportunity it presents would be a crime.”

If you agree, make sure your school knows your view when term starts in a few weeks.

Play the game

LABOUR aren’t the only villains when it comes to selling school playing fields.

The Coalition has flogged at least 21 since the election.

Ministers insist pupils didn’t lose out.

But Schools Secretary Michael Gove — an impressive champion of better chances for all children — must not forget the importance of sport in his enthusiasm to raise academic standards.

He should make a commitment today to stop all future sales of playing fields.

And how about ministers spending a session a day on the sports field?

Some might talk more sense. And several could do with the exercise.
